Almost 4 million forint to the sick children of Pápa

On January 20 the Strategic Airlift Capability handed over a donation to the ‘Together for the Sick Children of Pápa Foundation’, an organization that support children whose medical treatments are not, or only partially, covered by health insurance.

Many of the approximately 150 militaries that are employed at the Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW) within the Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) programme have spouses and families joining them to the little town of Pápa in northwestern Hungary during the time they are stationed within the programme (usually 1,5-4 years). These spouses make the most of their time here. For example, the Norwegian Christmas Market, established in 2009 by a Norwegian spouse, has become an annual charity tradition.

Thanks to the tremendous support of spouses also from other participating nations, this event has grown into a significant and successful charity initiative year after year. The event receives valuable backing from the SAC and the HAW, which have generously contributed funds over the years. However, the true heart of the event lies in the time, effort, and resources devoted by the spouses involved.

The event is organized by the Christmas Market Committee, which consists of seven Norwegian spouses. During the market, volunteers from the SAC member nations set up stalls to sell food and Christmas-related products, many of which are handmade and sourced from across the member nations. The market also features raffle games and auctions, emphasizing its mission of raising funds for charitable causes.

 - We are ever grateful for everyone who puts in a lot of hours, money and resources making this Christmas Market possible, QSI the International School and for the local businesses that sponsor us with great prizes and gift cards for our lottery. We could not have done this without them, says Norwegian organizer Janine Nethus Dickens.

The total proceeds from the market and auctions, along with additional funds raised through the HAW's Christmas Dinner, make up the donation amount. Each year, the organizers select a different foundation to support. This years beneficiary - Together for the Sick Children of Pápa Foundation – received 3,935,085 HUF, an all time high amount gathered through the Christmas market.

 - That your choice fell on our foundation this year is a tremendous honor and joy for us. We will use your extraordinarily generous donations for truly noble purposes, says Dr. Zita Schveighoffer, head of the foundation.

The Norwegian Christmas Market will be back again in November 2025.
