Million dollar investment expected to increase SAC aircraft availability

Pápa, 21 July 2023 – The Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) has recently installed C-17 maintenance platforms to expedite aircraft repairs. The platforms surround the aircraft's four engines and enable mechanics to work simultaneously on engine parts while also easily accessing difficult-to-reach sections. Previously, Boeing mechanics had to rely on single cranes to repair and access parts of the aircraft.

The new portable and elevatable platforms not only improve repair turnaround time but result in safer Home Station Checks (HSC). In the organization’s fleet of three, this upgrade has the potential to significantly improve the Mission Capable Rate, the percentage of total time when the aircraft can fly and perform at least one mission.

Upgrading the way SAC aircraft are maintained was the decision of the SAC’s decision making body, the SAC Steering and Programme Boards. 12 Member Nations agreed to an investment of approximately 1.2 million US dollars to enhance the organization’s airlift capability through improving maintenance efficacy.

The SAC will celebrate its 15th anniversary next year and this recent upgrade is one of many underway. A Combined Aerial Port Facility and a C-17 Aircrew Training System Facility will extend the SAC campus in the coming years.
