Romania uses Strategic Airlift Capability C-17-s for Türkiye relief missions

Pápa, 9 February 2023 – A day after news broke of a shattering earthquake in Southern Türkiye and Syria, Romania requested Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) transport for the Romanian General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations’ (IGSU) disaster response team and their equipment. Romania used the SAC to aid Türkiye’s efforts of search and rescue operations and disaster response.

The SAC’s operational arm, the Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW) delivered 3 fire trucks, 3 vans, a disaster response team, and 6 pallets in two missions on 8 and 9 February from Otopeni, Romania through Pápa, Hungary to Adana, Turkey.

Romania, the SAC’s 5th largest contributing nation, has extensive history with using the SAC for humanitarian relief missions. Last year, a SAC C-17 transported a Romanian firefighter brigade to the South of France to aid wildfire-fighting.

The thoughts of the SAC team are with those affected by the disaster in the region. We stand ready to assist and support in any way we can and are proud to support the efforts of the international community in this time of need.
