New Combined Aerial Port Facility will extend SAC campus

A dedicated area for cargo preparation is essential for a transport and logistics solution such as the SAC. Today, a temporary building serves this purpose lacking many complex solutions standard in sophisticated military aerial port operations.

SAC Member Nations jointly fund building a permanent, modern facility to enhance SAC capabilities and transport process flow. NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) is the contracting entity, and NSPA's Airlift Management Programme manages the more than 10-million-euro project, which started with today's groundbreaking. STRABAG, the company responsible for construction, will hand the new facility over to the SAC at the beginning of 2024.

The new construction will increase SAC capabilities, ensure efficient and effective airlift operations, and demonstrates the SAC nations' commitment to the C-17 program at Pápa. SAC nations are grateful for the strong relationship between members of the Strategic Airlift Capability, Pápa Air Base leadership, and the local community

said SAC Steering Board chairperson Jason Hinds.

The Combined Aerial Port Facility will house a storage space of 3200 square meters, nearly 60% more than today, airdrop and -cargo hall, offices, and a 33 meters tall parachute drying tower.

The new building will significantly enhance how we prepare for missions here in Pápa. With it, we can optimize our workflows and have better time, asset, and human capacity management once it is built.

said Heavy Airlift Wing Commander Colonel Peder Söderström.

The Combined Aerial Port Facility will be the newest addition to the SAC campus – an office and command building, a purpose-built C-17 hangar, a warehouse and a service utility building – and precedes a C-17 simulator building, planned to be built in 2025 on Pápa Air Base.
